Wedding Albums and Prints
I really believe that it is incredibly important for a newly married couple to invest in a wedding book. It has been said many times before, but it's something that really can't be repeated enough: -when the wedding day is over, the cake has been eaten, your wedding dress goes into storage or is sold and the flowers wilt and die, what do you have left to remember your wedding day?
The answer of course, is your beautifully created photographs. It's a sobering thought to consider that other than the couple themselves, the only physical legacy of their wedding day are their beautiful photographs! Photographs live on. They not only will bring joy to you but to future generations as you (and they) relive the magic of your wedding day. Keeping that in mind, I believe it is incredibly important that your timeless images, -these amazing pieces of art that are so personal to you, be displayed in the most beautiful way possible which of course, is a custom-designed wedding book.
In this age of electronics and instant imaging, couples seem to believe that a high resolution disc of their wedding images is all they need. Why? Maybe the reason is to save money. That's understandable but does it really save money? I'd have to say not. Not because I would say that but because the reality is that it ends up being a false economy.
However, my question is this: what do you plan to do with such a disc? As a professional photographer, I have many years of digital photographs stored on my computer. I can say from personal experience that as much as I absolutely love all these photographs and the memories they bring back to me, it is incredibly unusual to switch on my computer with the intention of sitting down and looking through them. There is no doubt that having a high resolution disc as a form of backup is a great idea, but as an end product? No.
Some clients who have purchased only high resolution discs from me have then gone on to get some very average (dare I say poor) quality prints from their local lab and because designing an online digital book is easy and cheap, many see it as a way of saving money. Saving money is all well and good but there is always a catch. Using a mass, one-size-fits-all type of product that is readily and cheaply available tends to go Pete Tong when the image files do not perfectly match the calibration of the lab's colour profiles. I know that sounds like gobble-de-gook but the net result is that the client frequently ends up with disappointing results.
Something else you should consider: Leaving images in a digital format on a high resolution disc is actually not a great idea. The long-term compatibility of the files or the disc isn't guaranteed. How easy is it for you to play your parents old VHS video collection? The simple answer is -you can't and, even if you could, would you even want to? Think of all the other stuff we used to use that are now all but useless. It may not have occurred to any of us yet, but are JPEG files and CDs / DVDs going to be any different? Technology and the market constantly changes and evolves. We thought vinyl was here for ever -then came videotape, -then came CDs, -then mini discs. In a few short years that's all changed. We now listen to music on our smart phones or iPods. Ever had your favourite CD scratched? Ever been told that a hard drive is unreadable? That just can't be said of a beautiful wedding book which will always be there.
I used to offer box sets of 7x5 prints of all my clients final images. To a lot of client's, prints in a box seemed like a brilliant way to remember their wedding day. The down side though is that sorting through and looking at hundreds of individual photo prints just isn't very practical. Easily marked with fingerprints, they get bent and easily go out of sequence. Displaying the most magical day in any couple's life in a small box as nothing more than a collection of small prints just can't be the best way to present someone's wedding day. I just can't think of a more detrimental way to take a stunning photograph and take all the impact out of it (other than rarely viewing them on a disc via your laptop!)
Looking at it in the round….. fast-forward the clock 20 years. Your children come to you one day and ask: Mum, Dad, what was your wedding day like? You are able to take them into your sitting room, sit them down on the big comfy sofa, and open in front of them a beautiful book that contains your wedding day memories in all their glory. As they turn the pages and become more and more mesmerised by how stunning you looked; the story of your day unfolds before their eyes. An amazing thing happens - you too are transported back to one of the happiest days of your life. Best of all that you are able to share your memories with your children and in turn they will create their own memories of you as if they had been there themselves.
Having that ability is simply priceless. And that is why I believe wedding books are so important. They really are as relevant today as they always have been and I for one would like to think not only that they should be but that they always will be.
